About Us: Highlights of Fifty Years (1960–2012)

The history of our fire company is a testament to the dedication, resilience, and growth of a community coming together for the greater good. Here are the highlights of our journey over five decades:

Early Beginnings (1960–1961)

  • Initial Collaboration: Concerned citizens from Monaghan Township partnered with Lisburn Community Fire Company to enhance local fire protection. Lisburn stationed an army surplus fire truck in Monaghan Township, laying the foundation for a dedicated local service.

The Formation of Our Company (1962)

  • March 26: An organizational meeting was held to establish the new fire company.

  • April 25: The charter and incorporation were officially approved.

  • June 16: The first fundraiser, a car wash and bake sale, raised $68, marking the beginning of community support.

Building Our Foundation (1960s–1970s)

  • 1966: Secured 11 ¼ acres of land and began construction of a pavilion and the “Block Building” engine house.

  • 1973: Implemented a Junior Firefighter program to encourage youth involvement.

  • 1975: Hurricane Eloise highlighted our members' heroism as they rescued residents trapped by floodwaters.

  • 1979: Responded to the Three Mile Island accident, showcasing our readiness for regional emergencies.

Milestones in Growth (1980s–1990s)

  • 1984: Introduced bingo games, a successful fundraising initiative.

  • 1988: Responded to a significant airplane crash on Nell’s Hill.

  • 1989: Assisted during riots and fires at the State Correctional Institution at Camp Hill.

  • 1997: Honored Chief Sylvester Fletcher Jr. with a firefighter’s funeral.

Recent Achievements (2000–2012)

  • 2005: Hosted our last community festival, an event that had been a cornerstone of our fundraising efforts.

  • 2010: Played a critical role in the Christ Lutheran (Filey’s) Church fire response.

  • 2012: Celebrated our 50th anniversary, reflecting on a proud history of service.

Call Statistics Over Time

Our fire company grew steadily in response capability, from 41 calls in 1973 to 180 calls in 2011, demonstrating our expanding role in safeguarding Monaghan Township and neighboring areas.

This timeline represents more than just dates and events; it chronicles the spirit of teamwork, service, and commitment that defines our fire company. We honor the legacy of those who built our foundation and continue to strive toward excellence in serving our community.
